What the Fall Season Means to Me

September 22nd was the fall equinox. The 2018 summer season officially ended and autumn, a.k.a. fall, began. Shifting between these two seasons is not too hard because there still are warm days to cherish and some farmers markets are still open.

Plate with kale, almonds, lentils, tomatoes and hummus.

Pixie’s 7-Day Vegan Challenge

A 7-day vegan challenge. Hmm. What had I signed up for? I was worried. But I’ve learned that to worry is to put faith in the wrong thing, i.e., a negative outcome. I had to turn my thinking around to be successful in this experiment. When you’re hungry that’s hard to do.

Fresh vegetables including kale, cabbage and cucumber and a dozen eggs.

Pepper on Meal Kit Subscription Services

Hmm, what can I make for dinner from this delicious selection of ingredients? Pepper on Meal Kit Subscription Services I love to cook. I cook every day. My way of unwinding is to cook – usually with a glass of wine. I rarely use recipes on weekdays; instead, I use my experience and imagination to…

Four pink roses with green vines.

Between Two Grandmothers

My two grandmothers’ cooking styles and ways of loving were as different as their personalities and upbringings, they were night and day and from different worlds.

Plants in the garden with morning sunshine.

On Tiny Gardens

Read Pepper’s blog: People are often surprised when I tell them that Albuquerque has frigid winters.

Garlic + Olive Oil (A Life) Lesson

He was a man with a big intellect and heart, Pixie’s cousin JW. Rugged, strong and principled. We lost him much too early. How do you go on when there is such an empty place at the table?

Better Homes and Gardens well-worn cookbook.

Pepper: On Mothers + Cooking

Perhaps a perfect tribute to a mother is to continue her cooking legacy. My mother is wonderful in many different ways, but teaching me how to cook is something I am truly grateful for.

Bowl of chicken soup with carrots and raviolis in a china bowl, plate, spoon and napkin.

Pixie: On Mothers + Cooking

It would be very hard for me to follow in my mother’s footsteps because I never really considered that was possible. In a lot of ways. Definitely in cooking.

4 heads of white garlic with tops removed sitting on blue, ceramic roasting dish.

On Garlic

Growing up in an Italian household, garlic was a given – an important staple used in just about everything …

A Confession

I’m being totally honest here …  I’m food-obsessed. The kind people who know me might be rolling their eyes in their head but not outwardly to me. I appreciate that. This is one reason why I love them.

Outdoor table with plates of pasta with mushroom alfredo, glasses of white wine.

Cook Together!

Our family experienced a heart-breaking tragedy last summer when my brother died unexpectedly. There are many things I miss about him and with each passing day the list gets longer. His wicked sense of humor, his kind smile and easy laugh, his friendship … and his incredible cooking top the list. The man could cook!

Bowl of dried, red chile peppers and pinto beans.

The Day I Had a Flat Tire and Discovered a Bakery

I was supposed to be on the train north to New York City to visit with my brother and his wife who were on the East Coast for a brief time but, instead, I’m in the parking garage at the train station in Baltimore staring at my car with a flat tire.
